Every year I set my 3 year goals for where I want to be. These include my financial, professional, physical, and spiritual goals. Over the past decade this process has brought me a lot of success, but it also identifies gaps in my performance. What kind of gaps – well if the same goal keeps reappearing on the list without notable progress it indicates one of three things:
- It wasn’t really a goal – it was just wishful thinking.
- It didn’t have the level of priority I intended it to have at the start of the year(s).
- Most likely, I got caught in the whirlwind (for more detail on the whirlwind read, The 4 Disciplines of Execution).
As I move towards 2019, the earth has circled the sun 59 times and the big #60 is on the horizon. As I reflect back, there are some really big goals that I have yet to attain – some of these date back to my 20’s and 30’s. 59 years and I haven’t yet “ARRIVED.” I doubt that I ever will. What is it that Robert Browning said, “Ah, but a man’s reach should exceed his grasp, or what is heaven for?” I imagine I will still be setting goals at 95. Now that goal may be to have a really good bowel movement, but a goal is goal.
The purpose of this post is to encourage all of my friends and readers to press on no matter what. Have you been talking about quitting smoking for 10 years, but your still puffing away? This is the year to quit. Have you failed year after year at losing weight and figure what’s the use? Don’t stop trying. A few years ago at age 54 (after years of saying I was going to lose weight, I actually did – I lost 43 lbs). This year by age 60 (April 28th), I will be in the best shape I have been in since I was 40! Check back here in 122 days for proof!
Just so you don’t get this all wrong. I want to share an important part of this process of taking time to write down goals – you will fail at some and accomplish others, but if you pick 3 or 4 things that really matter – you will make progress. It might be small progress, you might only achieve one goal – but the intentional process of setting a goal activates our psyche and we are much more likely to succeed.
In closing let me share a few of my 2019 goals. If they have an asterisk, then they have been languishing in the past, but this year brings a new beginning and a new commitmment.
- 10% increase in my annual income.
- Learn (relearn) Spanish. *
- Flip a property. *
- Focus on fitness (diet and exercise daily).
There are some great tools out there to help you. Evernote has a new feature this year to help with goal setting, NOOM has a great accountability feature for diets and exercise. The Panda Planner is a good management tool for staying on track. My favorite is my personal journal. I keep notes each day of successes and failures, and then there is the most macabre feature in my journal – I have a countdown to my 85th birthday (9,247 days). I hope to live longer than that – but counting down reminds me of the precious nature of each day. No matter how you count it – every day takes me one day closer to eternity.
What are you waiting for? You have 4 days to get your act together, set some tangible goals and have an amazing 2019! Go For It. This is your year.
